Runners in the Costa Brava

Knowledge

Not our first rodeo

This running trip was born from Pablo and Pasquale's love for this wonderful island and its people. After years of exploring its trails they are now ready to share their knowledge.

The trails

Beautifull towns, mountains, beaches .

The terrain will be mostly very smooth. Only a few short sections will be more technical, most of the time we will be on pleasant and fast terrain, a real joy to run!

UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO

Sicily will be an incredible experience: just 8 runners will take part in this running adventure. With this small group we'll explore the western area, discovering unexpected views, amazing landscapes and unusual flavours. An unforgettable week into the heart of the Mediterranean, where life is still simple and hearts beat strong!

Pablo and Pasquale

After meeting thanks to the organization of a big running event in Italy between Dolomites and Cinque Terre, Pablo and Pasquale decide to organize their own event in Italy in their image and likeness.

Sicily, Pasquale's home region, couldn't have been a better place. A region that has been a crossroads of the great cultures of the Mediterranean and beyond, a treasure chest of precious artistic, food and wine and natural treasures just waiting to be discovered.

The thought of running across it has started to become a topic of daily conversation. Yes, because in this land they see all the beauty of sharing, of stopping to talk to a stranger and ending up having a coffee together, of being enchanted by the unforgettable sunsets, by the beautiful villages where life still flows slowly, by the Mediterranean Sea with its crystalline waters.

The love for this project has united them together to the point of creating a deep friendship that goes beyond simple collaboration. For them, the trip to Sicily is a journey into friendship, culture, sharing and the art of enjoying life that is at home here.

Running guides Pablo and Abdu

Day 1 - Maretimo Island

10km (700↑|700↓)

The story we want to tell begins with an island—Marettimo. Part of the Egadi archipelago, it is the most remote and wild of the islands, described by Pasquale Mangione as the most spectacular trail he has witnessed in his mountain guide career. Marettimo is one of the Mediterranean’s most precious¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ gems.

Apart from the small fishing village that gives it its name, the rest of the territory is unspoiled, characterized by steep cliffs and dramatic slopes that plunge into the sea, traversed by spectacular trails far from mass tourism. The highest peak, Pizzo Falcone, faces Sicily to the east and Africa to the west. Here, you literally run between the sky and the sea, surrounded by the deep blue horizon, the intense green of Mediterranean scrub, and the remnants of ancient civilizations that have passed through the island—Romans, Carthaginians, Vandals, Byzantines, Saracens, and Spaniards.

It feels like traveling back in time, to when nature reigned supreme, and humans revered and feared it while attempting to tame it. An epic run in the heart of the Mediterranean, ending with a relaxing aperitivo of local products aboard a local fishing boat, discovering the island’s most hidden and enchanting corners.

Day 2. Gateway to Beauty

18km (850↑|850↓).

Oh Trapani, Trapani, sei bellissima, you are beautiful. What an elegant city, the pure essence of Mediterranean charm. This is why we will spend two days here. It will be the link between Africa and Greece. Trapani will lead us to Erice—a journey up to Olympus, or perhaps just a gateway to a new place. Get ready for an overdose of beauty.

Trapani is an ancient city rich in history, with a harbor frequented since pre-Roman times and later by Greeks and Byzantines. Its perimeter walls, cobblestone streets, noble buildings, and beautiful Romanesque churches, along with the crystal-clear sea and the ocher-colored facades, make Trapani the perfect starting point to discover the relaxed and flavor-filled lifestyle that characterizes Sicily.

From the splendid location in the historic center, we will set off to reach the summit of Mount Erice and its medieval village—a panoramic balcony over the entire Trapani coast, from the Marsala salt pans to the Gulf of Bonagia—where we will taste some traditional sweets and an excellent espresso before taking a spectacular section of the Sentiero Italia trail to the Bonagia marina, our destination for the day. Here, we will enjoy a spectacular sunset from the edge of our sea-view pool, sipping a fine Grillo, a dry and delicate Sicilian white wine.

Cofee

Day 3. Exploring Coastal Wonders

22km (The Wizard) (300↑|350↓)

Waking up in Bonagia is simply spectacular, especially at our incredible hotel—the most stunning one on this itinerary. The swimming area is breathtaking, and after an extremely relaxing afternoon and a great night's sleep, you will be ready to tackle the longest day's adventure.

From the heart of a small fishing port, after running by the gulf of Bonagia we will reach an ancient village built by shepherds inside large limestone caves. After a coffee at the small bar of the association that manages its cultural activities, we will set off on a seaside run around Monte Cofano, an iconic mountain that dominates the northern coast of Trapani like an ancient pagan god.

Saracen towers and small votive churches will accompany us to Santa Margherita Bay and then to Macari, along a heavenly landscape filled with small coves, where you can take one of the most beautiful swims of your life. From here, with one final effort, we will reach the beautiful San Vito lo Capo, a small seaside town nestled beneath another imposing mountain, Monte Monaco. This village of low houses and white walls offers Caribbean-like beaches and traditional cuisine that blends the flavors of the sea with those of the land, in a skillful mix of tastes and aromas that is hard to find elsewhere.

Day 4. Wild Mediterranean Paradise

14km (600↑|800↓).

The last stop along the Trapani coast is the Zingaro Nature Reserve, a true corner of paradise! Today, there's no need to pack in the morning, as we will be back at the hotel in the afternoon. We continue our journey eastward, and this day is all about climbing to experience some of the most spectacular views imaginable.

We start with a beautiful panoramic ascent, leading to a technical trail that gradually descends towards the sea, bringing us through one of Sicily’s most remarkable World Heritage areas. The remoteness, the endless view of the sea, grazing animals, the refreshing sea breeze, and the final swim at the most stunning beach you've ever seen—all make for the perfect reward after traversing this wild corner of Sicily. This is a day that combines adventure, incredible scenery, and the beauty of one of Sicily's most cherished natural reserves.

Fideua in Cadaques

Day 5. Discovering the Heart of Sicily

20km (400↑|1000↓).

After four days in the Trapanese, Sicily’s ancient, irresistible force will have already transformed you. Just when you think you've begun to understand this land, everything changes. Today, we head to the Madonie—the mountainous heart of Sicily, recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2015 for its unique ecological value.

The Madonie is extraordinary, with cliff-hanging villages where small houses perch atop rocky cliffs, as if seeking refuge from mythical beasts. The landscape feels like something out of a fantasy—surreal and captivating. Our adventure takes us through dramatic terrain and these remote villages, rich in history and natural wonder.

Tonight, we will stay in one of these remarkable villages, at Antonio’s marvelous family-run hotel. This accommodation is authentic, local, and beautiful. Antonio will welcome us with the warmth and hospitality that only a true Sicilian can offer, making you feel at home in this stunning and unique place—a perfect connection to the soul of Sicily.

Fideua in Cadaques

Day 6. The Madonie to Cefalù

10km (350↑|450↓).

The Madonie is not just an alpine ecosystem in the heart of the Mediterranean; it is also about the villages, the food, the wine, and the people—all just a step away from the sea and the wonders of a coastal city like Cefalù. The narrow streets of Cefalù connect the beauty of the waterfront with architectural gems over a thousand years old, weaving together the sacred and the secular in every corner. The people here are warm and eager to share the beauty of their land with those ready to discover it.

Today’s run will be a remarkable journey from the pastoral highlands down to the coast, where we will finally touch the sea. It is a pioneering adventure that will leave each participant with an enduring love for this land, its people, and its traditions. Nostalgia will already be setting in, as you find yourself thinking about when you might return to this beautiful place that will always welcome you like a second home.

I went on the Moroccan adventure last November, which I loved, so I jumped at the chance to go on their first Sicilian trip and it didn't disappoint!

Pascal and Pablo had put together an itinerary that captured the essence of Italy and which incorporated a huge variety of experiences.
We ran through narrow cobbled streets of historic towns, along coastlines with big views and big skies, swam in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean and watched some beautiful sunsets.
We ventured through ancient mountain forest and climbed and descended some great trails. Thunderstorms hampered plans sometimes but the alternatives were always enjoyable!

Pascal's local knowledge and enthusiasm was invaluable and Pablo's passion as always for the local culture and scenery infectious.
It was a privilege to be part of a lovely group of like minded people
and to share moments in nature, or dancing on the beach to a reggae band at a cous cous festival then enjoying the solitude of a church. it was a relaxing, fun, cultral, adventurous holiday with amazing food and many happy memories.

Mille Grazie Run The World Adventures. I’m sure you’ll be seeing me again.😊See more.

This was my first running holiday and I was apprehensive before arriving but my fears were soon allayed upon meeting Pablo and Pascal. Their passion for life and getting a real feeling of an area you are running through is invigorating, intoxicating and motivating.
All of the trails were meticulously planned with alternative options available if there were any issues. The places we stayed were fantastic and far exceeded my expectations. There were even a couple of surprises along the way!

I cannot recommend Run the World Adventures, Golden Pascal and Sicily highly enough. Enjoy the trails, coffee, food, wine and dips in the sea, and leave the rest to these guys! If you have been on a trip like this before, then add Sicily to your must do list. If you have never been on a trip like this before then make this your first destination, it will truly not disappoint and neither will these guys.

CAN I BRING AS MUCH LUGGAGE AS I WANT?

We recommend packing light, as your luggage will be moved each day by our support van, which has limited space. A soft rucksack or expedition kitbag is ideal, and we suggest avoiding very large, hard-sided luggage. You will also need a small daypack for essential items during the run. Keep in mind that the lighter you pack, the easier it will be for everyone.

WHAT’S THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?

We stay in some of the most glamorous hotels in Sicily—places that combine comfort with the warmth of local hospitality. However, due to the small, authentic nature of these accommodations, we do not have the option for single rooms. Rooms are typically shared between two participants.

WHAT TYPE OF TERRAIN CAN I EXPECT?

The terrain in Sicily is one of the least challenging of all our itineraries. It includes a mix of coastal paths with breathtaking views, heritage park trails, rocky cliffs, and charming village routes. The trails range from easy to moderately challenging, with some uneven and rocky sections. You’ll get to experience Sicily's natural beauty, but without the intensity of more demanding terrains.

WHICH KIND OF CLOTHING & EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?

We suggest running in layers, as mornings can be fresh before warming up. Bring summer running clothes along with a light windbreaker for early mornings. Sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray, and a lightweight camelbak or hydration pack are essential. Don’t forget your swimsuit, as we may have opportunities to swim in beautiful spots along the way. For evenings, casual clothes will suffice—think flip-flops, shorts, and a sweater for cooler nights. Bring your favorite running gear.

WHAT KIND OF RUNNER SHOULD I BE?

This adventure is designed for runners of all levels. Whether you are a seasoned runner or someone who runs at least twice a week, you will feel at home on this journey. The itinerary accommodates different paces, ensuring that everyone can enjoy their own level of challenge. Fast runners will have the opportunity to push themselves, while slower runners can take their time without pressure. The routes are designed with slight variations to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable and challenging experience at their pace.

No need for GPS. You will always be guided by experienced local guides, including Pablo and Pasquale, who know the trails inside and out. Relax and focus on the adventure while our team takes care of navigation and safety.

Daytime temperatures range from 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F), with cooler evenings around 16°C to 20°C (61°F to 68°F). The weather is usually dry, but occasional rain showers are possible.
